Why We Choose This Life: Real-world leadership

Because the pasture teaches what the boardroom forgets about leadership.

Last week, I was out changing the water in the pasture. My yearling walked over, grabbed my dam, and pulled it right out of the ditch she'd waded into. Pushed her off and put it back in. She thought about coming back in, stood there and considered it, looked it over, and decided that wasn't going to be acceptable. And she left it alone.

The everyday ranch work usually teaches the lesson before we know we need it.

That's a yearling. Nobody sat her down and explained boundaries. She learned it by watching, by being corrected consistently, by a herd that doesn't tolerate nonsense. And standing there in the mud,it hit me: every manager I know could use these lessons.

We choose this life because it keeps teaching us. The horses, the mud, the water, the broken plans, the daily chores — none of it lets us fake leadership. This life asks for patience, clarity, correction, consistency, and courage before breakfast.

That is why we keep choosing it. Not because it is easy, but because it is honest.

Here’s the hard truth: no one prepared you to be a manager. They just liked your work. They handed you a title because you were good at your job, but they never trained you to make these decisions. They did not prepare you to lead people, hold boundaries, correct problems, manage conflict, or carry the weight of the business.

That gap is real. But it is a gap. It is not a failure. You are not drowning because you are not capable. You are drowning because you were handed responsibility without a playbook.

Clarity, correction, and consistency show up in the pastures long before they show up in a leadership book.

That exact gap is why Savage Bandits exists. We choose this life because of our passion for it and our legacy in it. Because of this life, I have been able to develop leadership skills in real time, instincts tested in the round pen, sharpened in the pasture, and cemented through education.

Not everyone gets to do that. Not everyone has the opportunity to learn how clarity, boundaries, correction, and accountability actually work under pressure.

That is why I choose this life, and that is what I want to share with other managers who are drowning out there. A life raft. A real-talk, no-nonsense space with real people who get it.
